Our Professional Auto Paint Correction Process at Mobster Auto Detail

Detailed Cleaning and Decontamination

The first stage of the auto paint correction process begins with providing a detailed wash to the vehicle’s exterior so that we can decontaminate the paint in full from any embedded contamination. This process is important because it removes any bugs, iron, dirt, and grime that could hinder the auto-paint correction process or hide existing defects.

After our specialized hand wash that strips the paintwork, most vehicles will need a clay bar to remove particles that are ingrained in the pores of the vehicle’s paint, as a result, leaving the paintwork ready for the next step.

Paintwork Assessment and Inspection

Our auto paint correction specialists are familiar with a variety of paint types across brands like Dodge, Ford, Chevrolet, Audi, Mercedes, and BMW amongst other more common brands like Jeep and Toyota.

Once the vehicle has fully been cleaned and decontaminated by our auto paint correction specialist, we will then look at the paintwork in different lighting angles using either natural or handheld lighting to look for swirl marks, scratches, oxidation, as well as any other defects in the vehicle’s paintwork.

This inspection will dictate what kinds of pads, compounds, and techniques will be used to correct the paint in the least-diminishing method possible.

Compounding, Buffing, and Polishing

Once our auto paint correction specialist has selected the right tools,  it is now time to start the most important step of the paint correction and polish.

Depending on the package selected or the work requested, our paint correction specialist will use different levels of pads and compounds to appropriately remove the imperfections assessed. Light swirls can normally be tackled with softer pads and less abrasive polishes, while deeper scratches and machine car wash swirl marks will require heavier compounding as well as,  abrasive cutting, as a result, often requiring multiple steps.

As a best practice, the lightest and least abrasive combination of pads and compounds should be used before proceeding to a more aggressive method. This technique ensures that the clear coat is worn out as little as possible. This is a process that normally takes a few hours to days depending on the level of work needed.

Frequently Asked Questions about Auto Paint Correction

To explain, paint correction is the removal of swirls, scratches, or oxidation in a vehicle’s clear coat through the use of specialized tools. Also, commonly referred to as polishing or buffing.

In short, no. Paint correction is not to be confused with a paint touch-up which is the process of using small abrasives on the surface of your vehicle’s clear coat to even it out as a result,  erasing scratches and enhancing shine. Only the existing clear coat can be corrected as well as leveled.

Auto paint correction is the process of removing defects as well as imperfections such as (hazing, marring, scratches, and swirls) from a vehicle’s paint by leveling out its clear coat using mechanical abrasion. This is achieved when a small layer of clear coat is removed revealing a smooth, even, and highly reflective surface.

Because of the abrasive nature of auto paint correction, there is a limited amount of times it can be performed on a vehicle. That is why it is important to properly protect and maintain a vehicle‘s paint after correction is performed.

Each time an auto paint correction is performed there is a small amount of paint that is removed to reveal a smooth and even surface. Professional Auto Detailers are trained to determine how much clear coat is left on the surface.

To explain, waxes, sealants, and ceramic coatings are all automotive coatings that can be used to protect your vehicle. Each coating has its own set of strengths and weaknesses.

It is important to understand that traditional waxes protect a vehicle short term and need to be reapplied every few months to provide optimal paint protection. Wax also protects a vehicle exterior from heat damage, UV damage, oxidation, contamination, as well as chemicals in the environment. They are organic and give off a warm shine.

However, sealants are similar to wax in the protection they provide against the sun, heat, chemicals, and scratching. To explain, because they are synthetic and polymer-based (ceramic sealants), they can adhere to your paint for longer to provide better durability and protection. Furthermore, with the proper maintenance, sealants can normally last around half a year or longer before needing reapplication. They are also known for their reflective glass shine and strong hydrophobic properties.

Ceramic coatings do provide the highest amount of protection to a vehicle’s exterior. Ceramic coating is a protective chemical polymer that bonds to a vehicle’s clear coat to reinforce it, providing the highest level of hydrophobicity, shine, as well as protection. The ceramic coating will protect your vehicle’s paint from many things such as UV rays, chemical contamination, etching, and scratching. It also has self-cleaning properties that reduce the amount of maintenance necessary to keep a vehicle looking clean. While ceramic coatings may be the most expensive option, the truth is they offer long-term durability lasting anywhere from one year to five or more years before reapplication.

While here at Mobster Auto detail we will always strive to improve your paintwork as much as possible during your session, unfortunately, there may be scratches that will be left behind because they may not be safe to remove. That is why we can only offer up to 95% correction on our multistep correction.

Yes, anyone can purchase a polisher, pads, and compounds. However, without experience, misusing these tools can result in thousands of dollars of damage that will be more costly to repair. Our auto paint correction specialists at Mobster Auto Detail are trained in paint correction and ceramic coating with different tools for different scenarios and many different types of vehicle paint. It honestly depends on the depth of the damage, the age of the water spots, as well as the surface area of the vehicle as to whether water spots can be improved by paint correction.
